I get asked all the time “Hey Jay, how’d you get started in video production?” Well, it actually started when I was in high school. I wandered into the local public access cable station and signed up for a class on how to shoot and edit video. It was something I enjoyed very much - to the point that I started thinking maybe this would be a career that I’d be interested in pursuing. I studied television broadcasting at St. Cloud State University, and have been working in broadcasting and video production ever since.
For me, film and video has always been more than just a means of entertainment. When I was a kid, I had a hard time hearing and as a result, school was pretty tough for me - especially in the early years. To become a better student, I spent extra time with visual devices such as videos, filmstrips and computer programs to help me learn. The logic was that if I could see it, I could learn it. Soon the extra work paid off, resulting in much better grades. Eventually I got my ears fixed, but the visual component of learning always remained with me.
Today, as a video producer, I haven’t forgotten how video is an excellent learning tool, because you can actually show your audience how something works, demonstrate the benefits of a product, or tell a story that creates an emotional connection between the viewer and the subject. Because of these properties, combined with its portability and its easiness to share, I believe video is the most powerful marketing tool a business can use to effectively sell their product or service today.
